$500 Harwich Artists' Guild Scholarship.
HHS Juniors Excel
In addition to college scholarships, HHSFOTA also provides funds to current HHS students for off campus learning. Juniors, Jeff Strome and Ramsey Musk have received funding for this summer.
Jeff Strome has been awarded $500 to attend the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy in Virginia (July 6 - August 2). Jeff just finished his third year at the New England Conservatory (NEC) Preparatory School in Boston, where he has spent Saturdays during the school year studying viola with Michael Zaretsky of the Boston Symphony and rehearsing with the NEC Prep School's Youth Symphony under the direction of Steven Karidoyanes.

The Wintergreen Summer Music Academy is a month long program of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival's resident professional orchestra. Jeff will be involved in an intensive chamber music program, studying with violist Steve Larson of the University of Hartford Hartt School of Music.
The academy admits a total of 40 students each year, most of them "outstanding undergraduates and graduates music students from major American music schools and conservatories." A "select number" of advanced high school students also are invited to attend, and Jeff successfully auditioned in April.
Jeff began his classical music studies with Harwich Suzuki teachers Lauren Milligan and Kristen Barca and later studied with Yoko Waynen of the Cape Cod Conservatory and Cape Cod Symphony. He moved to the NEC in September 2006 to study violin with Liana Zaretsky of the Boston Pops and switched from violin to viola in February 2008.
Ramsey is a prolific artist who works in many media including clay, pastels and acrylics and was recently awarded the Junior Book Award for Visual Arts.
He has won many awards for his art work including:

for the week long class - "Painting Portraits in the Studio" taught by Antonia Ramis Miguel. Antonio is an internationally known Spanish artist who has exhibited not only in Spain but also in Austria, Washington D.C., and London.

HHSFOTA Funds Visiting Artist
Erik Zambrano spent a week working in theater and studio art classes at Harwich High School. HHSFOTA provided the funding for his visit. He is a graduate of Fordham University who majored in Theater Directing and who is involved in the theater arts in New York City. Erik has taught high school students at Columbia University,
Erik worked with studio art students in altering old books to create representations of ideas and in using text as a a design element to create new images.
Students also created art from found objects. Themes included self portraits, the environment, mythology and social issues.
In theater classes, he worked with students using lighting to create moods. Students then created their own performance pieces.
Fine and Performing Arts Students Visit New York City
aaaaaaaaaaaaa Central Park
Liane Biron, Deb Donovan and Rose Richard accompanied approximately thirty students on a trip to New York City, May 14 - 16. A variety of theater, music and art experiences were included at Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as guided sightseeing tours of Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral. Broadway shows included "Jersey Boys" and "Thirty Nine Steps". HHSFOTA helped students raise money for the trip with a gift basket raffle and support of an ad booklet for the spring musical/fall play.

Fashion Designer Visits Art Classes
Sioux Campbell, a Brewster resident and instructor at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, visited Liane Biron's art classes on June 8. As a graduate of the Fashion Design Department of Kent State University and former manager at several clothing stores, she brought much insight, information and inspiration to the students concerning the career opportunities open to them in Fashion Design. She shared her own creations beginning with their concepts and progressing through sketching, pattern making, sewing and modeling of the garments.

HHSFOTA Scholarship Recipient Updates
Anthony Harris (HHS Class of 2006), tenor , is a double major in Vocal Performance and Business Management at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

He recently traveled to Europe and sang in Germany, Italy, and Austria with a select group from the Moravian College Choir. Last year, he had the opportunity to sing with the accomplished musician Bobby McFerrin in his workshop at Moravian College. This year, Anthony performed for world-renowned opera singer, Deborah Voigt, from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, in a master class held at Moravian College.
Michael Raneo (HHS Class of 2006) is currently finishing his final semester at The New England Institute of Art in Boston. He will graduate one year ahead of schedule in August with a BS Degree in Audio & Media Technology. Along with taking classes, Michael is working at the newly opened House of Blues Boston, and has begun a promising internship at one of New England's premier post-production studios, Soundtrack Boston.

"I made it this spring while taking a class at the Cape Cod Museum of Art with Steve Kemp from Kemp Pottery. It's high fire and Nat Doane, a former Harwich Alumni and BFA Graduate of the Ceramics Program at UMASS Dartmouth, fired the Seal as he is the Ceramics Studio Manager at the Museum." This piece was part of the Marine Art Exhibit at the Cape Cod Cultural Center, May 8-17.

"I'm taking a painting class at school with our artist-in-residence, Odin Smith so I chose one of my friend's photos (far left below) from the National Cemetery in Ireland to attempt to paint."
The class "is a cool multi-generational class/guided open studio thanks to a grant that Odin Smith got from the Cape Cod Arts Foundation!!!!!"

"I will be working at my studio located at 50 Pearl St, Hyannis and on my Masters Program.
The studio is open on Saturdays 11ish-4 and whenever else I am there. We have several events planned for the summer including Open Studio Art Walks planned for July 2nd from 5-8pm and August 6th from 5-8 pm. Studios and galleries throughout Hyannis will be open and several restaurants offer discounts to those attending. I look forward to seeing you."

All Cape & Islands Young Maritime Artists Search
Students from Liane Biron's art classes entered work in the All Cape & Islands Young Maritime Artists Search held at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod and cosponsored by the American Society of Maritime Artists. The exhibit ran from May 6 - May 17. The opening reception and awards ceremony was held on Friday, May 8.
A majority of the two dimensional works exhibited and all but one of the seventeen three dimensional pieces were from Harwich High School. . See the exhibition brochure here for all the entrant names and to view works by Ramsey Musk and Maddie Eldredge featured on the cover.
Ramsey Musk (junior), was awarded first place and $500 for his acrylic painting "Cape Dune" and his pastel "Pleasant Bay".
Maddie Eldredge (freshman) received Honorable Mention for her pastel, "Dune".
Abby Hanus, Denise Silva and Madison Schultz received Awards of Merit for their clay sculptures.
As part of the students' preparation for the competition, Russell Vuys, a Harwich resident and an accomplished member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the Cape Cod Art Association, demonstrated techniques to art classes during a visit in February. School to Careers Art Intern
Tabitha Eldredge (junior) participated in this year's School to Careers Art Internship Program offered through the Cape Cod Museum of Art. The mentoring program, in its twelfth year, pairs students with working professional artists. Tabitha worked for eight weeks with Brewster potter, Diane Heart who commented in the exhibit catalog that "Tabitha is a gifted artist and has an extreme talent with clay."
Tabitha's ceramic bowls and birdbath were on display at the museum along with the work of the other interns, through May 31.
Spring Concert, Tuesday, May 12, 2009
The final concert of the 2008-2009 school year was an occasion for the women's choir, concert band, and select choir to perform as well as an opportunity for student composers to present their work. The Harwich High School 5/4 Jazz Quintet, comprised of students in an Independent Study class, also performed. It was an evening for Rose Richard to bid farewell to 28 seniors as they leave Harwich High School.
Senior Arts Night - Thursday, May 7, 2009
Seniors highlighted their high school artistic accomplishments during Senior Arts Night in Harwich Port on Thursday, May 7. The sixth annual event allowed the students to exhibit and perform in a non-school, professional environment.

The Art Exhibit and reception was held at the W.H. Lutz Studio and Art Gallery where owner, Bill Lutz , generously made it possible for fine arts students to display two and three-dimensional work.
For the musical part of the evening, approximately 15 seniors sang and/or performed at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 533 Main Street. Harwich High School Friends of the Arts and Pilgrim Church member, Cindy Kosloski, has arranged for the use of the church sanctuary since the event began in 2004 when her daughter, Amanda, who is a recent music performance graduate of Keene State College, was a participating senior.
