HHSFOTA to provide Funding
At the December 2009 meeting, HHSFOTA voted to provide approximately $400 to pay for bus transportation for students to attend auditions for the All Cape Music and Southeast Music Festivals. Funding ($500) was also voted to continue the After School Open Studio Program at Harwich High School.

Honor for HHS Select Choir Alto

Alyssa Flynn, a HHS junior, has been selected to be a member of the Women's Honor Choir of the Eastern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors' Association to be held in Philadelphia February 10-13, 2010. Alyssa received the honor after a summer audition and will be one of 6 singers from Massachusetts in an approximately 140 member chorus. After three days of workshops and rehearsals, the choir will perform at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Rittenhouse Square.

Alyssa was member of the 2008 All Cape Chorus, 2009 Treble Choir and wowed the audience with her rendition of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from Evita during the 2009 POPS Concert at Harwich High School.

HHSFOTA is helping Alyssa by contribution $500 to her housing costs.

Huge Distinction for HHS Violist

Violist and HHS senior, Jeff Strome, spent the month of July in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia playing classical music as part of the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy's string quartet program. During Wintergreen, he had the opportunity to study with Steve Larson of the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford and Joe Nigro of Sweet Briar College, dramatically boosting his musical skills.

On his return, he re auditioned for and was accepted into the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO) at the New England Conservatory (NEC). The YPO is the conservatory's prep program's top youth orchestra and is under the direction of renowned Boston Philharmonic Orchestra conductor, Benjamin Zander.

Jeff will spend Saturdays this school year, studying with Michael Zaretsky of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and in 3 hour rehearsals with the YPO. Now in his fourth year in the NEC Prep Program, Jeff is preparing to audition at major music conservatories for college including the Manhattan School of Music. He will perform briefly at the beginning of HHSFOTA's event "Rockin' For the Arts" to express his appreciation for the group's support of his musical studies.

Jeff Strome has been awarded $500 to attend the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy in Virginia (July 6 - August 2). Jeff just finished his third year at the New England Conservatory (NEC) Preparatory School in Boston, where he has spent Saturdays during the school year studying viola with Michael Zaretsky of the Boston Symphony and rehearsing with the NEC Prep School's Youth Symphony under the direction of Steven Karidoyanes.

The Wintergreen Summer Music Academy is a month long program of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival's resident professional orchestra. Jeff will be involved in an intensive chamber music program, studying with violist Steve Larson of the University of Hartford Hartt School of Music.

The academy admits a total of 40 students each year, most of them "outstanding undergraduates and graduates music students from major American music schools and conservatories." A "select number" of advanced high school students also are invited to attend, and Jeff successfully auditioned in April.

Jeff began his classical music studies with Harwich Suzuki teachers Lauren Milligan and Kristen Barca and later studied with Yoko Waynen of the Cape Cod Conservatory and Cape Cod Symphony. He moved to the NEC in September 2006 to study violin with Liana Zaretsky of the Boston Pops and switched from violin to viola in February 2008.

October 2008

The well attended October 24th Autumn Gala raises nearly $10,000!

The following, written by Harwich H.S. student parent and FOTA member, Pat Sanzo, sums it all up:

"Harwich High School Friends of the Arts is hoping the successful fundraiser it held on October 24th becomes the annual event not to be missed.

Whether it was the spirited bidding for premier seating Red Sox tickets between well known locals, gray haired dancers grooving to memorable 50’s, 60’s and 70’s songs or enjoying the impeccable experience of the Wequassett Inn, there were plenty of smiles in the crowd.

Much credit for the evening’s success was the result of the generosity of the gracious Wequassett Inn, local legendary band “The Total Strangers” and entertaining auctioneer Ken Wade. The ambiance of the evening was enhanced by the participation of The Guild of Harwich Artists, 820 Main Gallery and many local businesses who donated items for the auctions and raffle.

The students, teachers and families who benefit from the generosity of Harwich High School Friends of the Arts are thankful to all of the people who participated. The funds raised will allow the nonprofit organization to continue to fund items such as the Apple Computer Lab they purchased for the high school Arts Department, field trips and scholarships.

Thank you all for your outstanding generosity."

MARCH

Thanks to the incredible generosity and hard work of our members (Friends of the Arts), we raised $1000 during Grease performances to fund the cast party. The four performances were overwhelming and we enlisted men, women, and children in our efforts. Like the old days at Boston Garden, we took advantage of the auditorium heat and sold water up and down the aisles. This was a new and very successful tactic!

Thank you to all who donated water and goodies and/or volunteered time selling them as well as flowers and "Break-a-legagrams". We appreciate all those patrons who supported us in our efforts. The cast was able to celebrate, unwind and socialize in a safe environment.

A special "thank you" to Liane Biron who gets the prize for running the front of the house. She made everyone happy who came thru the door, even while she was turning back disappointed ticket seekers. She and her pottery students created the ceramic sunglass pins that also added to the fundraising effort.

A check in the amount of $608 was presented to Ellen Brookhart to help defray the cost of her trip (with husband, Larry) to Miami on the occasion of their daughter performing with the National Multicultural Honor Choir. Read more here.
